1 min on the phone, 25,000 lives
1 minute on the phone could mean 25,000 lives!
The deadly pitch
Is it reasonable to estimate that an app for managing call duration, such as TalkTime, could help someone whose average phone use is much higher save more than one minute of phone calls a day?
💀
I am betting that it can. Here is what follows:
💀
According to this source https://www.ginjfo.com/espace-environnement/green-it/science-et-technologie/telephone-portable-1-minute-de-conversation-cest-57-grammes-de-co2-20100615 :
One second on the phone is therefore equivalent to one gram of CO2.
💀
In other words, just one small minute of phone calls saved per person in France (50 million mobile phones) would mean more than one million tonnes of CO2 per year! Or 100 million tonnes worldwide (five billion mobile phones).
Incidentally, that is also equivalent to one billion MWh per year worldwide! (Source: https://www.greenit.fr/2009/04/24/combien-de-co2-degage-un-1-kwh-electrique).
💀
This is what using TalkTime, an app under development that offers limited-duration calls, could contribute, defining a new approach to phone calls that takes time into account. 🌳
💀
To add a grim perspective to these CO2 equivalents, here is an article estimating that 4,400 tonnes of CO2 cause one death:

💀
In France alone, each minute saved using TalkTime would mean 250 human lives saved from deaths caused by carbon emissions!
💀
Worldwide, that would be 25,000 human lives saved annually, for just one minute less on the phone each day across the world…
💀
An impressive but grim figure which, by this calculation, I feel obliged to share with everyone.
💀
Thank you.
